Twenty-one Cumberland High School students enrolled in Building Trades I recently completed the 10 hour OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) Safety in Construction class. This class trains workers and employers on the recognition, avoidance, and prevention of hazards in the workplace. After successful completion of the course, participants are awarded their OSHA cards, which are issued by the Department of Labor. The training covers such topics as fall protection, personal protective equipment, electrical safety, excavation hazards, and life-saving equipment.

Building Trades instructor David Sullivan said, “I am very proud of them!” He added that students in his Energy and Power and Sustainability classes also completed training and received their OSHA cards.

Addison Gills--Cartersville Ruritan ScholarshipBoth the Cumberland Ruritan Club and the Cartersville Ruritan Club awarded scholarships to deserving students to help them pay for furthering their education. Three Cumberland High School seniors were awarded scholarships by the Cumberland Ruritan Club, which included Jeanne Robinson, Addison Gills, and Emily Meinhard. They were presented with their awards at the April meeting of the club. Then Addison Gills and Emily Meinhard both applied for and won the Cartersville Ruritan Scholarships. They were recognized for their accomplishments at a recent Ruritan dinner.

The revised school calendar for the 2013-2014 school year was approved at the June 10, 2013, meeting of the Cumberland School Board. According to the new calendar, students will start school on Monday, August 12, 2013. New teachers will report to the New Teacher Workshop, to be held July 30-31, 2012. All teachers will report on August 1, 2013, for teacher workdays/in-service days.  The Open House for parents and students will be held on August 8, 2013, from 3:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M.

Several other changes were made to the calendar. On early dismissal days, students will be dismissed at 12:00 Noon. These days include September 11th, December 20th, January 20th, February 13th, March 28th, April 18th, and May 9th. These early dismissal days will provide opportunities for more teacher professional development.
