Mr. George Reid, Jr., the Cumberland School Board member representing District 4, has been on the Board for approximately 23 years and has served as both Board Chairman (for 16 years) and Board Vice-Chairman. During his time in office, he was instrumental in the building of the new Cumberland High School/Middle School Complex, the establishment of the JROTC program, the implementation of the high school one-to-one laptop initiative, and the implementation of Senior Project. He has also been an advocate for providing students with advanced mathematics courses, Career and Technical Education options, and music education. As a Board member, he served on the Governor’s School Board of Southside Virginia, where he was Chairman for two years. He has also served as the voting delegate for the Virginia School Boards Association and was Chairman of the Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) Committee.
Mr. Reid has the distinction of serving as School Board Chairman during the planning and construction of all three schools. The building of Cumberland Elementary School in 1996 was his first big project, to be followed by the construction of the Cumberland High School/Middle School complex in 2008.
Mr. Reid received his Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science, with a minor in history, from Virginia State University. He maintains ties with his university and is a member of the Virginia State University Alumni Association. Currently, Mr. Reid is retired, having worked forty years in the insurance industry where he advanced to a management level position.
Mr. Reid is committed to staying current with educational policies and trends. He consistently achieves Award of Honor status in the Virginia School Boards Academy and attends events such as the Governor’s Conference on Education. In 2014, Mr. Reid was named to the VSBA All Virginia School Board.
Community involvement is also important to Mr. Reid. He is a trustee/deacon for Sharon Baptist Church as well as Chairman of the Trustee Board. In addition, he has been Chairman of the church March Fundraising Rally for over 35 years. He is also president of the Cumberland Deacons and Trustee Association of Middle Virginia; a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.; a lifetime member of the NAACP; and a Past Master and current Secretary of Randolph Lodge #30 of Free and Accepted Masons, Inc., where he has served as the Chairman of the Christmas Banquet for over 20 years.
A native of Cumberland, Mr. Reid resides in the county with his wife Martha. They have three children and seven grandchildren. Mr. Reid is an avid golfer and his other hobbies include reading, listening to music, and watching television. He is especially interested in all sporting events and his favorite book is the Bible.
