School Lunch Hero Day, held on May 4, 2018, recognizes the importance of the Food Services Department employees. This day kicks off School Nutrition Employee Appreciation Week, which extends from May 7-11, 2018. This recognition, which was initiated by the School Nutrition Association in conjunction with Jarrett Krosoczka (the author of Lunch Lady) is intended to highlight the ways in which school nutrition professionals make a difference in the lives of the students that they serve. The Food Services staff members are responsible for following federal, state, and local regulations to ensure safe and healthy meals are available to students. However, staff members also try to serve appealing meals to entice students to eat a healthy breakfast and lunch.
Across Virginia last year, 53 million breakfasts and 114.3 million lunches were served. On average, more than 229,075 breakfasts and 634,850 lunches are served to Virginia’s students each school day.
The Food Services Department members, led by William “Bill” Brandt (Food Service Coordinator), include the following: Shirley Banks, Jocelyn Barley, Frances Booker, Josephine Brooks, Diane Brown, Lisa Burton, Susie Carter, Christelle Hill, Susan Jackson (Asst. Manager), Linda Pryor (Asst. Manager), Cheri Raby, Marcel Rowe, Veronica Scott (Manager), Addie Trent, Tina Trent, and Roberta Woolridge. The Department is also fortunate enough to have three substitute Food Service staff members, including Phyllis Corder, Kathleen Jackson, and Queen Townsend.
