Cumberland School Board Recognizes Mentors
The Cumberland School Board recognized two community volunteers—Mr. Tim Doss and Mr. Ryan Bates—who served as mentors for students during the 2016-2017 school year. Both men are Cumberland High School graduates and wanted to give back to their school volunteering. They served as mentors to approximately a dozen at-risk students by assisting with homework and classwork and by offering words of encouragement. They met with their mentees in the high school conference room and even had lunch with students.
Mr. Doss works for the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and Mr. Bates is a deputy for the Cumberland Sheriff’s Department. Both plan to assist with the new mentoring program being sponsored by Mr. Alfonso Bell for the 2017-2018 school year. Dr. Jeffrey Scales noted, “We are so glad to have both of them serve as local role models for our students.”
Mr. Tim Doss and Mr. Ryan Bates were recognized at the September meeting of the Cumberland School Board for serving as mentors to Cumberland High School students.
